      Today’s art world is in the "Renaissance of creative studios". Following the nation and private sectors, in the last three years local authorities have emulatively invested in the establishment of creative studios. Gwangju Metropolitan City is believed to be the matrix of such creative studios in Korea that offer work spaces to artists for a limited duration. The Gwangju Museum of Art, which is under the management of the Gwangju Metropolitan Govemment, opened the Palgakjeong Creative Studio in 1995 for the first time among national and public museums in Korea Cclosed in 2011) and the Yangsandong Creative Studio in 2004. Also, the Gwangju Museum of Art became the topic of conversation by opening a creative studio in Beijing, China in December 2009 to help local artists advance into Beijing. In December 2011, the Gwangju Cultural Foundation opened a creative studio specialized in media, while the city govemment is promoting the Jungwoe Comprehensive Art Park that will accommodate a creative studio. Although G찌Tangju has continued growing up in terms of extemal development as the mecca of creative studios, some point out that there is lack of substance. In other words, the quality of programs, which is the most important to creative studios, is insufficient yet and the studios merely offer spaces only. Also, creative studios in Gwangju lack differentiated programs and identity that represent the characteristics and identity of Gwangju, the city of democracy, human rights and peace.
      This study would be significant in that it aims to investigate development strategies for creative studios in Gwangju, which have the title of "Korea’ s first" and a 15-year tradition, to grow up as the cradle of world-class modern art. Creative studios in Gwangju have urgent needs for differentiated programs and management strategies, identity for spaces and regional cooperation plans. As the market of cultural industries in the region increases, in-depth studies on how to take advantage of such creative studios are required.
      In this point, this study comparatively analyzes plans to efficiently utilize creative studios in the art city Gwangju with creative studios in the cultural capital of Europe, Paris. Note that this study mainly referred to "Dreaming of the top: Creative studios in Gwangju" that is a special report series featured in local newspaper Jeonnam Ilbo for ten times for July to September 2010.
