Salpurichum is originated from Shamanism, primitive religion. Although it has been furcated from Kut(Shamanistic instrumental), a branch of collective entity, it does not seem to be religious or have a sign of formality. It rather comes from Hotanchum, a folk Hal chum, which then turns into art. Hence, the history of dance movement can be postulated from the process that Hotanchum became Salpurichum.
Late Yi Dynasty, besides ritual dance during Kut ritual, people liked to gather and enjoyed unceremonious (easy) dance. While some Mudang continued to do Mudang'job with a deep association with regular community life, others organized special Mudang groups, went around neighbors and took pleasure from singing and dancing, or joined Kibang(fermale entertainer' institute) as a female entertainer. Hence, they Mudang refined the simple, instant Hotanchum into a class of art, and then, the Hotanchum was established as Kibangmu'arts with Pansori developed by SoriKwangDae(singer) at Honam province. Salpurichum means prevention and/or removal of bad luck, and is now established as traditional dance at a southen part of Korea. It is the art that expresses Korean emotion and ultimately balances motional and emotional beauty.
Because Salpurichum is an unique form of dance adorns Korean emotion among various types of Korean traditional dance, it can be a clue to explain aspect of undeviated racial emotion as well as beauty of Korean. At present, Salpurichum is classified as art that was refined from instantaneous dance and, indeed, has a significant component of the original form of dance.
