사회적 지능의 관점에서 본 정신지체인의 적응행동 특성과 그 함의 개관 = Social intelligence perspective on adaptive behavior for person with mental retardation

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회적 지능(Social Intelligence: 이하 SI)이란 "인간관계에서 빗어지는 해결과제에 현명하게 대처해나가는 능력"이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 SI는 대인관계 상황과 대인관계 교류에 대한 이해능력과 대인관계를 통한 바람직한 결과를 얻기 위해서는 누군가를 도와야 한다는 것을 이해하고 또 그렇게 이해한대로 행동할 수 있는 능력이라고 부연해서 설명할 수 있다. 결국 SI는 사회적 능력의 인지적 토대라고 할 수 있기에 사회적 성취는 SI에 달려있다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 개념으로 볼 때, 장애아동이 보이고 있는 특성 중의 하나인 사회적응 상의 문제는 종래의 적응행동, 10가지 적응기술 중 2가지 이상에서의 지체로 설명하기보다는 SI의 관점에서 설명하는 것이 타당성을 확보한다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 1978년 이래로 언급되기 시작한 SI의 관점에서 본 정신지체의 적응행동 특성을 조망해 보는데 있다. SI의 관점은 지금까지 정신지체의 정의에서 지배적인 우위를 차지하고 있었던 지능지수(IQ)에 의존한 분류체계의 문제나 또 이것에 지배를 받아 왔었던 적응행동의 문제와 같이 정신지체 개인의 요구와 잠재력에 대해 객관적인 방법에 의존하여 이해되었던 측면에서 더욱 인간중심의 이해를 가능하게 해주는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The term social intelligence(SI) refer to "the ability to act wisely in human relations". Specially, it refers to one’s ability to understand interpersonal situations and transactions and to use that understanding to assist one in achieving desired interpersonal outcomes. In short, SI may be considered the cognitive underpinning of social competence and is an important contributor to success in social activities, because children and adults with a variety of handicapping conditions are less likely to demonstrate skill in interpersonal relationships and the attendant success that comes with such skill. Such a broader approach reflects the fact that much of the most interesting recent work on SI has been done in these two other areas, and also reflects the current move toward a cross-categorical approach.
Interest in SI is part of an increased awareness of the interactive nature of disability and of the limitations inherent in relying excessively on IQ(or academic intelligence). The construct of SI provides an opportunity to view individuals with disabilities in a broader and more meaningful way. Research in SI is potentially useful in promoting a greater understanding of how persons with disabilities fit in with the new community contexts in which they are increasingly living, working, and studying.
