As urban economy rapidly develops, the safety of living environment has become more important. This study attempted to figure out the effects of strengthening territoriality in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) on the improvement of apartment dwelling environment and user-environment exchange in apartment communities. The purpose of this study is to prevent crime by changing apartment dwellers’ behavioral patterns and strengthening social interconnection among them. Some writers such as C. Ray Jeffer and Oscar Newman have proven the specific effects of territoriality on apartment environment in their papers and theories. In this study, three highly related cases were analyzed: Pruitt–Igoe, a large urban housing project in St. Louis, Missouri; Yeomni-dong Salt Street in Seoul; questionnaire survey and individual interview with prisoners in Baoding Prison, Hebei, China. The study results found that the physical and psychological aspects of territoriality played a role in reducing crime in terms of conditions and goals of crime incidence. At the same time, they facilitate exchange between residents and living environment and form regular and irregular supervision system and sense of territory. As a result, collaborative prevention and its effects were found.
