In this paper, a color gamut mapping algorithm is proposed to produce a color-matched result between two display devices, ex. monitor and printer or scanner and printer. The proposed algorithm uses complementary color contrast characteristics. The complementary color means the relation between two colors which have opposite hues. If the complementary colors are mixed, then the hues of the original colors are disappeared and a gray color is reproduced. The mixed existence of the complementary colors makes each color of the image sharp, vivid, and stable. The property of the complementary color is used to decide gamut-mapping points of each hue. According to the decided mapping points, the proposed method compresses the original gamut into the reproduction gamut or expands the reproducible gamut area. In the experimental result, the image colors reproduced by the proposed algorithm reproduce higher quality image.
