Recently, transitory gathering phenomena have appeared according to certain social issues, such as the Wall Street demonstration. The 'transitory' gathering phenomenon is mainly recognized as an act of protest and a performance. The 'community' was used separately from the 'society' from the newly marginalized class after the industrial revolution. After the Industrial Revolution, 'community' and 'society' were used separately, referring to the newly marginalized class. With this in mind, the researcher intends to present a transitory gathering phenomenon as a new concept of the community.
To this end, the existing discussions on the concept of community and 'communitas', 'absolute community', and 'public art' were examined with a theoretical background. Next, an empirical research was conducted on activists in the public art field. The reason is that transitory gathering phenomena are easily constructed through art and to explore the phenomenological meaning of transitory gathering. The results are as follows.
First, activists in the field of public art voluntarily performed art labor for the community as a group formed to overcome social alienation. Second, in the transitory gathering, the participants' narratives were centered and a common consciousness was shared, which could be viewed as a community. Lastly, the government's subsidy projects were inevitable and necessary for these activities, but had limitations and were an important for forming transitory community.
