그림동화의 기호 표현과 의미 작용의 효과 -앤서니 브라운의 ｢고릴라｣를 중심으로- = The Effect of Symbolic Expression and Its Meaning in Picture Story Book -Focusing on ｢Gorilla｣ by Anthony Browne-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그림동화 ｢고릴라｣에 나타난 글과 그림의 기호적 표현과 서술의 기능은 독자적인 서사를 진행하며 여러 가지 의미를 구성하게 한다. 들뢰즈가 정립한 󰡔의미의 논리󰡕가 보여 준 언어의 사건으로서 언어기호의 표현 작용과 의미 작용은 각각의 언어기호가 보이는 표면 효과로 독자적인 의미를 생성할 수 있음을 시사한다. 작품에 표현된 기표가 독자와 만날 때 만드는 기의 형성에서 의미 작용이 일어나기 때문이다.
이를 기반으로 그림동화 ｢고릴라｣에 표현된 글 기호와 그림 기호의 의미 작용을 분석한 결과 작품 속의 고릴라가 아버지를 대리하는 존재라는 점 외에 다섯 가지의 의미를 더 생성할 수 있다. 첫째, 작품 속의 고릴라는 한나의 부성 갈망을 알게 하는 존재성을 보인다. 둘째, 고릴라는 한나에게 부재한 모성으로서 의미를 지닌다. 셋째, 고릴라는 혼자의 시간을 보내는 한나에게 함께할 친구로서 의미를 지닌다. 넷째, 한나에게 고릴라는 로맨스 대상이라는 의미도 읽을 수 있다. 다섯째, 한나가 살아가는 세계 자체가 고릴라로서 한나 또한 고릴라라는 의미를 드러낸다.
그림동화는 글 기호와 그림 기호의 융합 및 복합으로 표현 작용과 의미 작용을 불러일으켜 독자들에게 저마다의 의미를 생성하게 한다. 이렇게 생성한 작품의 의미와 각 의미의 변용태는 작품의 의미 다양체를 생성하며, 해석의 다양성으로 독서의 재미를 높인다. 특히 동물 등장 서사에서 이와 같은 의미 다양체를 쉽게 생성할 수 있으므로, 이를 반영한 문학교육과 독서교육을 고려해야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this paper, I analyzed Anthony Browne’s picture book “Gorilla” as an event of language, in terms of the expressive and semantic functions of linguistic signs. The analysis method utilized the theory presented by Deleuze in “Logic of Sense”. It is a method of approaching the surface effect caused by the expressive and semantic functions of linguistic signs. This method viewed the written and pictorial signs in “Gorilla” as expressed events, and by interpreting their narrative functions in a fusion manner, it was possible to derive their semantic functions. As a result of the analysis, I was able to find out that the gorilla, a character in the work, has more than five meanings.
As a result of analyzing the semantic function of written and pictorial signs expressed in the picture story book “Gorilla,” five more meanings can be generated in addition to the fact that the gorilla in the work represents her father.
First, the gorilla in the work shows the existence that lets us know Hannah’s longing for fatherhood. Second, the gorilla has meaning as Hannah’s absent mother. Third, the gorilla has meaning as a friend who will be with Hannah when she spends time alone. Fourth, the gorilla can also be read as a romantic interest for Hannah. Fifth, the world in which Hannah lives is a gorilla itself, revealing the meaning that Hannah is also a gorilla.
Picture story books evoke expression and meaning through the fusion and combination of written and picture symbols, allowing readers to create their own meanings. The meaning of the literature and the transformation of each meaning thus created create a variety of meanings in the work, and the variety of interpretations increases the fun of reading. In particular, since such a variety of meanings can be easily created in narratives featuring animals, literature education and reading education that reflect this should be considered.
