This study examines the relationship between L1 writing anxiety and L2 writing anxiety of Korean learners. 140 learners participated to the survey concerning L1 writing anxiety and L2 writing anxiety. Writing Apprehension Test (WAT) developed by Daly & Miller(1975a) is employed for the question items.
The sub-factors of writing anxiety are categorized into three factors, which are low self-confidence, aversiveness in writing, and evaluation apprehension using factor analysis of Cheng, Horwitz & Schallert(1999). Based on these factors, this paper analyzes the relationship between L1 writing anxiety and L2 Korean writing anxiety using mean and variance of the sub-factors, correlation analysis, and regression analysis.
The results show that L2 Korean writing anxiety is higher than L1 writing anxiety and the degree of writing anxiety varies over the learning condition and proficiency of the learners.
In addition, the result finds that the most significant sub-factor, which can be regarded as the characteristics of writing anxiety, is low self-confidence as shown in the existing work. However, no interlingual transfer is observed between two languages. This implies that, in Korea writing, the impact of affective factors is less than that of cognitive factors, which is considered as crucial, especially in terms of the impact of L1 backgrounds.
