The aim of this study is to present an effective teaching method of Korean proverbs in the prospect of Korean language and culture education for the Indian learner of Korean language. A better understanding and proper use of the Korean proverbs not only helps to learn Korean language effectivily but play an imprortant role to learn about korean culture. Proverbs reflect the characterstics of a nation, It has been passed from generation to generation, contains a general piece of wisdom, truth, morals and traditional views, as a mirror Its reflects the thought of citizens and the socio- cultural aspects of the nation at that time. Therefore, this study has provided a model on what proverbs should be taught and how learners can understand Korean proverbs effectively as well as easily.The content of this study can briefly summarized by the following chapters.
Chapter 1 introduces the aim and methods of the study and performs literature review to find out the status of proverbs education in the field of Korean language education. The result revealed that there are many studies available regarding the importance of proverbs in the Korean language teaching and in the field of comparison study of Chinese, Vietnamies, English proverbs etc with Korean proverbs but, no study was found on the method of Korean proverbs teaching for the Indian learners of Korean language.So this sttudy has a purpose to search efficient and systemetic teaching method on proverbs for Indian learners of Korean language.
Chapter 2 examines the theoritical background which explains the concepts and characterstics of the proverbs and presents the importance of proverbs in Korean language education in prospects of communication, culture, intercultural and vocabulary teaching.
In chapter 3 I examines the present status of Korean proverbs by analyzing Korean language text book used by various universities in Korea and University of Delhi and some other proverbs teaching books and also TOPIK exam pattern since their inception. As a result I found out there characteristics and problems and finally I collected the list of 64 proverbs which are used repeatedly in the text books and TOPIK more than thrice. On the basis of analytical contents the listing and instruction of proverbs in Korean language materials were presented.
In chapter 4 I examined the selection and arrangment of the educational use of proverbs on the basis of frequency and understanding level. First I collected the list of proverbs based on the frequency of their use in Korean language materials such as text books used by many Korean language education institutes in Korea and India and I also analyzed the question patterns from 1~15 times Test of Proficiency in Korean Langugae. After selecting proverbs list, I confirmed and compare this list with other previous studies. In selecting and arranging the lists, I applied many different criteria including the frequency of the use of proverbs, comparison and contrast between Korean and Hindi proverbs, and surveyed to measure their understanding level of prover thorugh native Korean language instructors.
Secondly, for classifying this list according to the students understading level first I Compared the difference and the similarities between Hindi and Korean proverbs in the aspect of social and culture view of the both nations. The classification were made for the proverbs of Korean and Hindi into those proverbs with the same meaning and same expression, those with the same meaning but different expressions, and those who only exits in Korean laguage . This classification was based on Clifford Prator (1967) pattern of comaparative analysis study method. And in the next procedure I did a survey to measure their understanding level of proverbs thorugh native Korean language instructros. And finally I divided proverbs for education purpose in 3 level as beginner, intermediate and advance.
In chapter 5th based the result of the survey which was done in part 4 by native Korean language instructors, I proposed a method for teaching Korean proverbs effectively in Korean language and culture education prospects to Indian learners of Korean language.
