      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper focuses on John Steinbeck’s the sweeping California epic East of Eden which is considered Steinbeck’s most ambitious work and the masterpiece of his later artistic career. In this novel there were many kinds of Chinese migrants who lived in California during the late 1870s and early 1920s. Most of them were railroad workers, and some of them were the elder scholars and gamblers. Unlike these Chinese characters, there was a major character, Lee whom Steinbeck cast as a Chinese servant and cook for Adam Trask. Steinbeck contrasts Lee’s individuality to the other Chinese groups’ stereotypical roles. To analyze Steinbeck’s descriptions of various characters and rhetorical devices, I approached Mailloux’s technique. His paradigm using the conversation between Huck and the black slave Jim in Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn provides a new interpretive view for the rhetorical and literary critic. By arranging these three Chinese groups in relation to Lee through rhetorical analysis, I can conclude that Steinbeck leaves to us the socio-historical debates on the Chinese migrants’ stereotypes in California in the 1950s. A rhetorical approach on the novel shows how Steinbeck can associate Lee with certain groups and lead to a debate about major social issues.
