논문 : 토니 모리슨의 『사랑』에서 더블의 종교적 함축성 = Doubles that "Cleave and Reveal" Love: Their Religious Implication in Toni Morrison`s Love

국문 초록 (Abstract)

모리슨의 소설은 국내에서 흔히 인종과 성담론과 결부된 탈식민주의적 관점에서 부단히 논의되어왔다. 그러나 후기 소설로 올수록 모리슨은 편견과 불평등의 불식을 위하여 사회적 혁명에 의지하기 보다는 개념에 대한 근본적인 성찰로부터 나오는 이중성을 인식하면서 사회적 혁명과는 다른 차원, 즉 내면의 혁명을 통한 변화를 모색하고 있다. 가장 최근 소설 사랑 에서는 그동안 막연하게 흩어져있던 내적 혁명에 대한 주장이 보다 직접적으로 형상화되고 있다. 그런 면에서 모리슨이 낙원 에서부터 희미하게 드러내기 시작한 종교적인 색채가 사랑 에 이르러 보다 더 분명한 색조를 띠게 된다. 특별히 모리슨의 소설마다 등장하는 더블은 사물과 개념의 양면성을 육화한 것이고, 이러한 더블의 갈등과 불화에 이은 합일은 모리슨이 자신의 신념의 결정체, 즉 사랑의 종교를 드러내는 하나의 장치라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 모리슨의 소설에서 거의 어김없이 등장하는 더블이 가장 최근작 사랑 에 이르러 우주의 궁극적 실재로서의 사랑을 드러내기 위한 장치임을 증명하고, 가장 오염된 사랑이란 단어의 진정한 의미를 모리슨은 어떻게 정의하고 있는지 밝혀보고자 한다. 또한 모리슨은 사랑을 단순히 윤리적인 차원을 넘어서 궁극적 실재의 차원에서 다룬다는 면에서 다분히 종교적임을 함께 증명한다. 흔히 종교적 경험의 구성요건이라 할 만한 초월적 존재와의 구체적인 만남은 없다. 다만 죽음을 넘어서 살아있는 초월적 존재를 서슴없이 등장시킴으로써 3차원 현실을 넘어서는 다른 궁극적 차원의 가능성을 열어놓고, 비가시적 세계까지 현실을 확장시킨다. 나르시시즘에 갇힌 개체성, 육체적 삶과 죽음에 갇힌 현실을 깨고 확장시키면서 궁극적 실재에 다가가는 것이 종교의 본질이기에 모리슨의 종교성을 논하는 것이 가능해진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Morrison`s novels have been studied mostly in relation with gender, race, or postcolonial discourses. However, specially in later novels, Morrison comes to distrust any social revolution and rather rely on inner revolutions to overcome prejudices and injustice. Her recent novel, Love, more directly addresses the need of inner revolution which is made possible by recognizing ambiguities and duplicity hidden under the surface. In this sense, Morrison`s religious dimension, which started to be added from Paradise, becomes more solidified in this last novel. Her frequent doubles incarnate the duplicity of all concepts and things, and at the end of conflicts and feuds, they arrive at reconciliation, by which Morrison cleaves and reveals her religious vision, that is, religion of love. This essay aims to prove that doubles as dramatic polarity amount to a deliberate device to dramatize her religious vision, and also to explore how Morrison defines love which is the most contaminated word now. Her concept of love goes beyond the sphere of ethics, but it is enhanced to the dimension of the ultimate reality, thus to the religious dimension. However, there is no direct encounter with a certain transcendent presence, but Morrison does not hesitate to present some transcendent characters who are alive beyond death. By doing so, she opens up the possibility of transcendent presence and extends the reality to the unrealistic and invisible world, which makes it possible to discuss about her religious vision because the essence of religiosity is to break the narcissistic individuality, expand the reality confined in the physical world, and glimpse at the ultimate reality, love.
