This article introduces the content and significance of “How to Read The Sixth Book of Genius: Romance of the Western Chamber 讀第六才子西廂記法” written by Jin Shengtan 金聖歎(1608~1661) in Ching dynasty, and provides a translation and annotation of the entire text. This essay appears in the second volume of The Sixth Book of Genius: Romance of the Western Chamber 第六才子書西廂記 (Complete eight volumes), which was a newly published work by Jin Shengtan, based on an analysis of Wang Shifu’s original work Romance of the Western Chamber 西廂記. Together with the two prefaces written by Jin Shengtan, “The first preface: Weeping for the Ancients 序一曰慟哭古人” and “The second preface: Dedicated to People in Future 序二曰留贈後人”, this text is an important source for examining Jin Shengtan’s evaluation of Romance of the Western Chamber and his perspectives on literature and creative theories of writing. It is considered that This essay played a significant role in making The Sixth Book of Genius: Romance of the Western Chamber widely disseminated and exerted considerable influence on the popularity of ‘How to Read (Dufa 讀法)’ type of writings in traditional Chinese fiction commentaries (pingdian 評點).
