〈潘文子契合鴛鴦塚〉는 명말의 소설집 《石点頭》에 실린 화본소설로서 그 바탕이 되는 고사는 太平廣記와 馮夢龍이 엮은 《情史》의 卷22에 실려 있는 潘章의 이야기이다. 이 작품은 여러모로 주목할 만한 점이 있는데 실제 전해오는 고사를 바탕으로 한 남성 동성애를 주제로 쓴 작품이라는 것, 주제가 남성 동성애라는 점만 제외하면 선남선녀간의 연애를 다룬 才子佳人 소설의 형식을 따랐다는 점, 작자가 작품의 주제를 그려내는 과정에서 의도적으로 기존 남성동성애 고사의 선례와 배치되는 구성을 택했다는 점이다.
구체적으로 이 작품은 작중 화자(narrator)입장에서 기존의 사회적 통념에 입각하여 동성애를 비난 혹은 조소하는 표면적 주제(surface theme)와 작자(implied author) 입장에서 동성애이건 이성애이건 상관없이 眞情만 있다면 그 관계는 용납될 수 있다는 실제적 주제(actual theme)가 공존하는 이중 구성을 보이고 있다.
또한 작자는 동성애의 묘사를 기존의 성적 쾌락에 탐닉하는 주인과 이에 순응하는 書童간의 계급적 종속 관계(hierarchy)에 입각한 욕정 위주의 관계가 아닌 주인공 潘과 王의 관계를 재자가인 구도의 전형적인 이성애(heterosexual) 관계의 애정 구도에 입각하여 묘사하였다. 부연하면 潘과 王 사이의 情을 묘사하며 시종일관 기존 이성애 관계에서 나타날 수 있는 긍정적인 특성을 모두 부여하는 시도를 하였다. 한편 작자는 동성애 커플은 당시 중요시 되었던 자손을 얻어 가문의 대를 계승한다는 유교적 가치관에 위배된다는 현실적 제약과 潘과 王은 일시적인 욕정에 의한 결합이 아니라 眞情을 바탕으로 한 백년해로를 목표로 하는 결합이라는 모순을 결국 이 커플의 동반 자살이라는 방법으로 해결하고 있다.
