This article explores how teachers in the English Department can use films to help students understand novels and culture more efficiently and interestingly. I present my American Novel Class as a case study and investigated several issues and problems teachers can meet while teaching. This essay is divided into three parts and each deals with the necessity to use film texts in American novel class, the case study, and, lastly, the issues and supplementary texts. The literary and film texts I discuss in this article are as follows: James Fenimore Cooper`s The Last of the Mohicans; Nathaniel Hawthorne` s The Scarlet Letter, Herman Melville`s Bartleby the Scrivener; Mark Twain`s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; F. Scott Fitzgerald`s The Great Gatsby, Richard Wright`s Native Son; Bernard Malamud`s The Magic Barrel and The Natural.
