근대 개성(開城)의 지리적 배치와 개성상인(開城商人)의 탄생 = A study on the Geographical meaning of modern Gaesung and the beginning of Gaesung-merchant

국문 초록 (Abstract)

개성상인은 근대에 탄생한 개념이다. 근대에 와서 특별히 부각된 개성상인 이미지는 크게 두 가지이다. 하나는 근대 자본주의 정신의 선각자적 이미지이며, 다른 하나는 민족상인의 이미지이다. 이런 개성상인 이미지는 식민지 시기에 만들어졌다. 그것은 중세 유교를 바탕으로 발달해 온 한양의 양반문화에 대한 반발과 그에 대한 대안을 모색하는 과정에서 창조되었다. 전근대 개성은 주로 일탈과 해방의 공간으로 표상되었다. 그것은 조선시대 한양과 한강을 중심으로 살았던 소위 중앙인들에 의해 만들어진 것이었다. 전근대 개성의 지역성은 근대 철도의 등장과 더불어 와해된다. 철도가 한양과 개성 사이의 지배 종속 관계를 규정했던 길의 논리를 해체하였던 것이다. 여기서 가장 결정적 사건은 압록강 철교의 부설이다. 이 철교를 통해 한반도와 만주가 이어짐으로써 조선의 지리에 일대 변혁이 일어났다. 새로운 길이 과거의 길을 대신함으로써 개성은 서울의 권위에서 벗어나 새롭게 자기를 사고할 수 있었다. 개성의 지역성이 변화하면서 개성상인에 대한 종래의 인식에도 획기적 변화가 발생했다. 전근대 개성은 한강을 축으로 발달한 조선 유교문명의 소외지, 변두리로 인식되었다. 개성의 상업적 분위기는 낙후된, 덜 문명화된 과거의 유산으로 인식되었다. 그런 관계로 개성상인에 대한 인식도 매우 부정적이었다. 그러나 근대에 들어 철도가 등장하고 압록강철교를 통해 중국, 만주, 유럽과 통하는 길이 만들어짐으로써 개성은 조선에서 가장 근대적 발전 가능성을 가진 지역으로 떠오른다. 동시에 개성상인은 조선의 근대화를 견인할 근대적 자본주의 정신과 윤리를 지닌 시민으로 고평된다. 나아가 개성상인은 자신을 옛 고구려의 영토였던 북만주의 새로운 개척자로 자임하면서 민족상인으로 성장하게 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The idea of Gaesung-merchant was formed in modern. There were two big images of Gaesung-merchant that especially were magnified in modern. One of them was precursor of modern capitalism. And the other was merchants those who owned national spirit. These images had meaning of resistance to Yangban-culture of Hanyang which was based on confucianism. Gaesung was symbolized the space of deviation and freedom in pre-modern Josun. This was made by people who lived in Hanyang and around Hangang. But these local images were collapsed with appearance of railroad. Because the appearance of railroad collapsed the dominant-subordinate relationship between Hanyang and Gaesung. Especially we have to pay attention to building of Aprokgang-railroad bridge in 1911. Since this railroad bridge made it possible to connect Josun to China, Manju, Europe …, geographical revolution broke out in Josun. This new railroad made Gaesung people think themselves in the new way and escape from the authority of Hanyang. The meaning of Gaesung-merchant changed dramatically with change of locality of Gaesung. People regarded Gaesung as outland or less favoured area far from confucian civilization of Hanyang in pre-modern Josun. Thus, their viewpoint of Gaesung-merchant was very negative. Having new railroad bridge to China, Manju, Europe …, Gaesung became the city which had the possibility of development. At the same time, Gaesung-merchant was regarded as the citizen who had the ethic and spirit of capitalism. And they were regarded as the leaders of modernization of Josun, too. Thingking themselves as the pioneer of Nothern Manju, the territory of old Koguryo, they became national merchants.
