Having established cooperative relations based upon the value of liberal democracy and market economy, the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom, with the common ground of Indo-Pacific strategy proclaimed recently, paved the way for further developing into future global strategic partnership on the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Following the accession of Charles III to the throne in 2023, President Yoon Suk-yeol paid a state visit to the UK in November, whereby he achieved substantial results in diplomacy, security and economy, elevating overall bilateral relations. In the summit meeting with the prime minister, the Downing Street Accord was adopted, which comprised further cooperation in digital, artificial intelligence, climate change, denuclearization of North Korea etc, and both countries agreed to elevate the bilateral relations to the global strategic partnership and set up the foreign and defense ministers’ meeting.
As having agreed to strengthen economic cooperations, the amendment to the FTA will be negotiated this year, which covers new areas of cyber trade, extension of supply chain, and realization of open policy, and in addition cooperation in the area of nuclear power plant, offshore wind power and other clean energy resources will be promoted.
