The Missing Picture (2013): Multimedia Memoryscapes in Documentary Film

Memories are often unwieldy and unstable, so the inclusion of memory in historiography raises many questions. How can memory be incorporated into official history? How can memories be mobilized and materialized in mediated forms? This paper explores possible ways of integrating media representations of memory by discussing the Cambodian-French experimental documentary film, The Missing Picture (Rithy Panh, 2013), in the context of history, trauma, and documentary evidence. Panh’s film expands the representational boundaries of documentary by adding new stylistic techniques of remembering and representing past trauma. In addition to photographs and archival footage, the filmmaker uses clay figurines to reenact and reanimate collective sensory memories and lived experiences. Panh further experiments by merging clay figurines and archival footage to create multimedia memoryscapes. This paper interrogates how these unconventional modes of documentary accommodate the temporal complexity and tactile materiality of mediated memories.
