This study is conducted to define concrete design attributes for design-driven innovation and to compare the differences in perception of design attributes between designers and consumers. Presently, innovation has emerged as the most essential value in a rapidly changing, highly complex business environment which sees the unexpected rise and fall of many companies. This has sparked several studies on innovation, in particular, design-driven innovation has been studied recently, given the expanding role of design in business over the past decade.
Through empirical research, this study investigates the design attributes that consumers perceive to contribute to design-driven innovation. This study was conducted in two stages. Firstly, 8 design experts were interviewed about (1)product innovation, (2)design contribution, and (3)design attributes, referring to 10 products that are acknowledged as design-driven innovations. Through these expert interviews, 20 design attributes concerning form, function, usability, structure, and technology were derived. Secondly, this survey was then repeated online among 29 designers and 29 consumers based on these 20 design attributes.
The results showed that both designers and consumers had similar perceptions about product innovation and design contribution. However, for products that were perceived to be overall less innovative than others, designers evaluated the product as more innovative than did consumers. Designers perceived the essential design elements for designdriven innovation to be ranked in the order of form, usability, and function, while consumers ranked them in the order of function, form, and usability. Consistent with this finding, when evaluating design attributes, designers attached a higher value to new form and usability, while consumers attached a higher value to new functionality. This study suggests concrete design attributes for design-driven innovation and consumers’ perceptions and preferences regarding design attributes.
