This study attempted to analyze the factors influencing suicidal ideation and suicide attempts of the elderly living alone, focusing on gender differences. Data from the 2017 Senior Citizens Survey were used, and 2,552 senior citizens living alone were selected as the subjects of the study. The research model was constructed using the elderly suicide theory, the independent variable was set to health status, the dependent variable was set to suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, and the parameters were set to depression. The following were the results of the analysis: First, female health status was not good than male, and their level of depression was higher, but suicidal ideation and suicide attempts were higher in men. Second, the effect of health status on suicidal ideation through depression was analyzed: In female, it was found that bad subjective health status, many chronic diseases, and restrictions on daily life functional status increased depression and suicidal ideation increased through depression. In the case of male, bad subjective health conditions and large numbers of chronic diseases were found to increase suicidal ideation through depression. Third, male was no effect of the health status on suicide attempts, but female the worse the subjective health status, the higher the number of chronic diseases, and restrictions on daily life functional status increased depression and suicidal attempts increased through depression. Based on these research results, the direction of subsequent studies and policy and practical implications were derived.
