Recently, the field of performing arts that provides various visual treats and interest to the audience by converging genres as drama, dance, music, and art is increasing. Specially, a wide range of attempts are being made by combining rapidly advancing scientific technology, computer, and visual media with performing arts. As a result, demand for versatile directors with a wide range of knowledge is gradually increasing in various fields as performing arts and visual media.
Encouraging fusion between various genres in dance performance is considered necessary as well to adapt to new changes and to provide variation in performance to the audience. If great improvements and achievements and changes being made in the field of dance performance are well integrated, it will be sufficient to develop various genres in the dance field and for audience to become interested.
Evaluation of dance performance cannot be the same for all the audience. What people feel through a performance is different as the emotions people feel cannot be exactly the same. Therefore, it will be possible to garner more audiences into dance theaters and can develop a wide range of audiences when various genres of dance performance that can fulfill various artistic value and needs of the audience.
This study considered the conversion of various genres as a role of directors in dance performance and analyzed through precedent studies and case studies. The researcher investigated the importance and role of directors in dance performance created through collaboration of director and choreographer by considering the necessity of directors in dance theater and through the analysis of a genre of dance, <The Palace : Jangnoksoo-jeon>. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze what of role directors play in dance theater performances.
The researcher investigated the role of directors in dance theater performance by analyzing <The Palace : Jangnoksoo-jeon> among Korean dance dramas, and conducted an interview with an actual director. It was identified that directors and choreographers in a dance drama understood about the area of each other, and showed a significant synergy effect when they cooperated with each other.
To sum up, the role of directors in dance drama performance is to maintain the ‘course of the plot’ to not separate the time of dancing and the flow of the story. Then, images should be organized well for choreography created by a choreographer to be demonstrated clearly on the stage. Lastly, directors need to create performance works to interact and communicate with the audience. Directors need to participate as if they are watching the performance through the eyes of the audience and constantly modify even after the performance is completed.
As a result, considering the dance theater that the researcher has analyzed, there were independent directors and was able to verify the effect and value. It is unknown if there can be positive effects in every dance performance as in <The Palace : Jangnoksoo-jeon> analyzed in this study, but it is considered that there can be sufficient effect in dance performance other than dance drama if directors and choreographers recognize the fields of each other and cooperate and collaborate actively with each other.
However, what is lacking in this study is the analysis on collaborative performance in dance theater performance by director and choreographer because this study investigated the roles of a director through one performance, Therefore, it is considered necessary to analyze collaboration cases of director and choreographer in other dance performances beyond the dance theater.
