It is intended in this thesis to inquire into the economic base theory and the theory of shift-share analysis for their positive application, thereby providing information and/or data necessary for the formulation of a regional development policy and contributing to the development of regional economics in the long run.
This study was carried out centering around the Incheon area selected for analysis, because it has growth potential combined with backwardness in terms of economic index. The period covered by analysis is 9 years of 1976-1984. The economic base theory and shift-share analysis constitute the theoretical background of this study. In this study, emphasis is placed on the analysis of Location Quotient, BIN ratio, and economic base employment multiplier. Shift-share analysis is also an important method for the analysis of regional economy, and priority is given to the analysis of industrial mix effect and regional share effect. The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1) The economy of Incheon area relatively mainfolded.
2) The base industry of Incheon area in 1984 was 20 out of total 50 businesses.
3) The BIN ratio of 1984 is -0.002:100.008, showing a relatively stabilized condition and a decreasing tendency in its fluctuation.
4) The economic base employment multiplier of Incheon area shows 2.2.
5) Incheon area is slower than the whole nation in economic growth. This is largely attributed to the stagnation of the manufacturing industry sector which occupies a greater proportion among those business enterprises operated in Incheon area.
6) The manufacturing industry of Incheon area has a strong competitiveness and most of other industries also have a favora able industrial mix effect.
It is believed that these results could provide useful suggestions in formulating a comprehensive policy for further economic development of Incheon area. It is also felt necessary to place emphasis on the application of a regional economic approach in establishing regional economic development plans in the future.
