    The purpose of this study is to provide basic data that can be used in planterior design by analyzing the color combination characteristics of variegated plants and their preferences. This study investigated the color values ​​of 18 species selected from the Marantaceae, Maranta spp., and Calathea spp. plants to produce color matching samples, and conducted color matching on 96 subjects. A subjective evaluation experiment was conducted on the degree of harmony and preference of the samples using a 7-level evaluation scale. The experimental results are as follows. A strong correlation(0.89) between color harmony and color preference was confirmed, and the overall evaluation trend was confirmed to be similar. The results revealed that harmonious color combinations often align with higher preferences, indicating a consistent pattern. The same color relationship between the GY series with a small color difference and the similar color relationship between the Y series and the GY series received high evaluation, while the contrast color relationship coloration sample between the R series, GY series, RP series, and GY series with a large color difference received low evaluation. The color scheme with a small brightness difference, the color scheme with a medium brightness and high brightness received high evaluation, and the color scheme with a low brightness and low brightness was low evaluation. Additionally, the brightness levels of the plant colors were found to have a significant impact on overall preference scores. The color scheme with a small saturation difference received high evaluation, and the color scheme with a large saturation difference and the middle color scheme received low evaluation. The same tone relationship color scheme sample received high evaluation, but the similar tone relationship and the comparison tone relationship color scheme sample received low evaluation. Through the results of this study, it was confirmed that the evaluation of preference and harmony varies depending on the plant color, so this should be taken into consideration when planning the planterior design and that plants with colors with high visual preference and harmony should be selected.
