자살예방담론에 나타난 치유문화 = Therapy Culture in the Suicide Prevention Discourse

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 한국사회의 위기를 진단하는 척도로 제시되는 급증하는 자살률과 이에 따른 자살예방담론이 생성되는 것에 주목하였다. 간단하게 말하자면, 예방담론은 자살(관련 행동)을 의학적, 심리학적으로 치료의 대상으로 삼고 이에 ‘환자’가 된 이들을 스스로 책임지는 주체로 보는 것이다. 본고에서는 이런 자살예방담론의 양상을 신자유주의가 가진 주체화의 기술인 자기계발하는 주체를 만들어내는 담론의 연장선상에서 살펴보려고 하였다. 즉 자기계발담론 안에는 정신의학적ㆍ심리학적 지식, 기타 정신요법 등을 중심으로 구성되어 있는 ‘치유담론(therapy discourse)’이라는 담론적 장르가 있는데 이러한 치유담론이 지배적인 세를 구사하는 영역으로 ‘자살예방담론’을 들려고 한 것이다.
치유담론은 신자유주의가 초래한 사회적 변화들에서 자유로울 수 없는 주체들의 심리적인 고통에 대한 ‘목소리’를 부여한다는 점에서 실제로 ‘치유의 기능’을 가진다. 하지만 치유의 책임을 개인에게 전가시킴으로써, 궁극적으로는 이러한 사태를 만들어 온 원인에 대해 비판 혹은 저항의 동력을 가지는 데는 한계를 가지고 있다는 점에서 보수성을 내포하고 있다. 그러므로 본고는 한국 사회의 치유담론의 번성을 사유하는 데 있어서 치유담론의 가능성을 인정함과 동시에 그것이 가질 수 있는 위험에 대한 분석을 함께 하는 것이 필요할 것으로 보인다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this article, I explore how the suicide prevention discourse is constituted, focusing mainly on how it treats suicide and suicide-related action as medical and psychiatric problems. What the discourse does is produce the suicidal patient as a self-responsible subject. This process of subjectification is a self-empowering process which is neoliberal in character, for it follows the neoliberal logic that one has to render oneself competent to cope with whatever hardships one may face. This article also explores how the suicide prevention discourse is affected by the ‘therapy discourse’ as a discursive genre that promotes the idea of self-empowerment.
The therapy discourse is constituted through assemblages of psychiatric and psychological knowledge, quasi-religious psychotherapies, etc. It appears to have a “therapeutic” role, in that it appeases mental sufferings deriving from social changes brought about by neoliberalism, But the discourse ultimately turns out conservative: it reduces individuals' resistant and critical capabilities by emphasizing the subject's self-responsibility. So, this article argues that as the therapy discourse has a limitation as well as a potentiality.
