자기개념 복잡성과 심리적 건강의 관계: 자기개념 구획화의 조절효과 = The Relations between Self-complexity and Psychological well-being: Moderating Effect of Self-compartmentalization

Linville(1985) insisted on “Stress Buffering Hypothesis of Self-complexity.” The succeeding studies, however, have not supported Linville's hypothesis consistently. In this study, self-compartmentalization is accounted of a variable which moderates the relation between self-complexity and psychological well-being. A total of 158 undergraduate students at a university in Gangwon-do, South Korea participated the study and completed a packet of questionaries including self-complexity, self-compartmentalization, depression, and perceived stress. The following is the result of the study. Even if self-complexity is high but self-compartmentalization is high, the psychological well-being is negatively affected. However, if self-compartmentalization is low, the psychological well-being is positively affected. That is, the self-complexity is verified to be positive psychological source with the support of self-compartmentalization. Implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

Linville(1985)은 자기개념 복잡성의 스트레스 완충가설에서 자기개념이 다양한 사람들은 그렇지 않은 사람들보다 스트레스 상황에서 우울을 적게 경험할 것을 주장하였다. 그러나 후속되는 연구들에서 이러한 가설이 일관성 있게 지지되지 못하였다. 본 연구에서는 심리적 건강을 우울과 지각된 스트레스로 측정하였으며, 자기개념 복잡성과 심리적 건강간의 관계를 자기개념 구획화가 조절하는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 대학생 158명을 대상으로 자기개념 복잡성, 자기개념 구획화, 우울척도 및 지각된 스트레스 척도를 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 자기개념 복잡성이 높은 사람들의 경우 자기개념 구획화가 높고 낮으냐에 따라 심리적 건강에 현저한 차이가 있었으며, 자기개념 복잡성이 높으면서 자기개념 구획화가 높은 경우 가장 심리적으로 건강하지 못한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 상담 장면에서 내담자의 심리적 건강을 돕기 위해서는 자기개념 복잡성을 높일 뿐만 아니라 자기개념 구획화를 낮출 필요가 있음을 시사해주고 있다.
