The objective of this study lies in identifying whether the S-HTP test is effective for diagnosing children with a depressive disposition since children with depression show a response in the Synthetic-House-Tree- Person (S-HTP) test. Elementary school students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades residing in small and medium size towns in Chungcheongnam-do became the target of this research, regardless of their sex. They were divided into a test group of 100 students and a control group of 100 students. The children in the test group are ones shown to be depressed, and the ones in the control group are children found to be normal and were chosen randomly.
The test tools employed in this study are children’s depression inventory paper and S-HTP.
The collected S-HTP pictures of the two groups were divided into four variables, and the four variables were again classified into 31 items for analysis, and they were subject to a cross analysis with the use of SPSS as a statistical treatment.
The research results include the following.
First, there were significant differences between the two groups in the integrity, expression of add-ons, sense of perspective, clarification of shape, position and contents of cutting, and deletion in the pattern of the entire pictures.
Second, there was a difference between the two groups in the number of people, balance, simplification, and facial expression in the pictures of people.
Third, there was a significant difference in the number of houses and the shape of wall in the pattern of the pictures of a house.
Fourth, there was a significant difference in the shape of the branches and the naturalness of a tree in the pictures of a tree.
It was shown through this study that the S-HTP picture test was effective in diagnosing children’s depression through several items.
However, it is necessary to have developmental, cultural, and social variables in the event of using S-HTP with a view to diagnosis as the S-HTP test is not known very well in Korea, and there are no diverse clinical cases at all.
