Ch``angam Lee Sam-man(蒼巖 李三晩 : 1770-1847), active in the Chosun period of the nineteenth century, was not considered to be the best calligrapher by his contemporary. Yet he was one of the calligraphers who characterized the late Chosun period calligraphy with Wongyo Lee Kwang-sa(圓嶠 李匡師 : 1705-1777) and Ch``usa Kim Chong-hi(秋史 金正喜 : 1786-1856). He was a strong-willed calligrapher who created his unique calligraphic style called Yusuch``e(流水體 : literally, a style that flows like water) through an incessant effort despite of his humble origin of Chungin(中人 : middle group of people). His calligraphic exploration can be seen through many of his calligraphic collections and calligraphic treatises recorded from his late fifties until his death. This paper focuses on his calligraphic theories from his calligraphic treatises to examine his unique calligraphic aesthetics. Lee Sam-man considered that calligraphy lost its Wongi(元氣 : original spirit) and its fundamental nature as it moved further away from its foundation since Han and Wei dynasties. As a way to recover the original spirit of calligraphy, he paid his attention to the calligraphic aesthetics of Wongijayon(元氣自然 : original spirit and nature) originated in the Han period. He encouraged the individualistic and independent calligraphic spirits based on natural human sentiments and he tried to renovate the Chosun calligraphy that lost its vitality and spirits by sublimating the power of spiritual strength into calligraphic beauty. In the area of artistic creation, he pursued dynamic beauty through the usage of the brush of Ch``ujon(推展 : literally, push and expansion) and realized the beauty of Ilwunmi(逸韻美 : beauty of comfortable rhyming) based on natural sentiments. This artistic achievement overcame to a certain degree the general calligraphic aesthetics of Chosun that bound arts with ethics and moved toward the free artistic achievement. To sum up, Lee Sam-man tried to create a dynamic Chosun calligraphy by combining the honest natural sentiments and vitalistic spirits and power. That is, he created a self-obtained calligraphic world through the Wongijayon calligraphic aesthetics
