정보기술의 발달과 공간 개념의 재구성 = Development of Informational Technology and Reconceptualization of Space

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As informational technology has been developed dynamically, not only new electronic spaces such as cyberspace and ubiquitous space have been generated, but also physical space has been fundamentally changed. This requires urgently a deep-insighted study on reconceptualization of space as well as reconfiguration of space in the real world. This study first looks into some characteristics of two kinds of new space, that is, cyberspace and ubiquitous space which have been emerged with the development of informational technology. And then it consider how the concept of space in general and that of electronic space in particular can be reformulated
with the development of informational technology, and how electronic space
and physical space are interrelated with each other. Finally this paper discusses on spatial metaphors and their implications which have been used in relation to the development of informational technology and the generation of electronic space. In conclusion, this paper emphasizes that electronic space has to be seen not as disappearance of physical space, but as generation of new space in a mutual complement with the latter, and that the spatial metaphors in cyberspace reflects material practices or power relations in the real space.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

정보기술이 역동적으로 발달함에 따라, 사이버공간이나 유비쿼터스 공간과 같
은 새로운 전자공간의 등장과 더불어 물질적 공간의 근본적인 변화가 이루어지고
있다. 이는 현실 세계의 사회공간적 재편과 더불어 공간 개념의 재구성에 대한
심층적 연구를 긴급하게 요청하고 있다. 이 논문은 먼저 정보기술의 발달과 더불
어 창출된 두 가지 유형의 새로운 공간, 즉 사이버공간 및 유비쿼터스 공간의 특
성을 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 정보기술의 발달에 따라 공간 개념 일반이 어떻게
재구성될 수 있는가를 고찰하고, 특히 전자적 공간을 공간적으로 재해석하고 나
아가 전자적 공간과 물리적 공간 간의 관계를 논의하고자 한다. 끝으로 이러한
정보기술의 발달과 전자공간의 등장과 관련하여 사용되고 있는 공간적 은유와 그
함의들을 고찰하고자 한다. 결론적으로 전자공간은 물리적 공간의 소멸이 아니라
그 연장선상에서 상호 보완적 관계 속에서 형성된 것으로 이해되어야 하며, 가상
공간에서 사용되는 은유들은 현실 공간의 물질적 실천이나 권력 관계를 반영하고
있다는 점이 강조된다.
