본 연구의 목적은 가정변인이 통제되었을 때 학교변인들은 과연 학교에서의 학생들의 삶의 질(QSL)을 결정하는데 영향을 줄 수 있는가를 탐색하는 것이었다. 이를 위해 학생들의 QSL을 개념화하였으며, 설문도구를 개발하여 학생들의 삶의 질 정도를 측정 및 분석하였다. 분석의 결과 학생들의 QSL은 그리 높지 않았으며(M=3.17), 친근한 교우관계가 QSL에 가장 긍정적인 영향을 주고 있었다. 또한 가정변인이 통제되었을 때 학교설립 변인을 제외한 학교유형, 교육유형 및 학교소재지 변인들은 학생들의 QSL에 유의미한 영향을 주고 있었다. 특히 학교유형 변인은 친근한 교우관계에, 교육유형 변인은 거의 모든 요인에, 그리고 학교소재지는 선생님에 대한 만족과 학교에서의 학업 및 일반적 성취도에 의미 있는 영향을 주고 있었다. 자료 분석 결과에 기초하여 남학생교육(Boys' education), 전문계 학교교육 및 농촌학교에 대한 인간중심의 투자와 관심이 있어야 한다는 점 등을 제안하였다.

The main purpose of the study was to examine the effects of school variables including school types(public and private), educational types (boys, girls and co-educational), curriculum systems (general and technical education) and school locations (cities and rural areas) on students' quality of school life. Based on the literature review, this study defined quality of school life as students' perceptions and attitudes towards their school life. Seven factors of QSL were identified by both the content analysis of students' in-depth interview data and a factor analysis of quantitative data collected from 4,429 samples. They included students' positive attitude toward their school, instability at school, teacher's caring, satisfaction with teachers' teaching, peer relations, achievements of school works and curricular.
The results of data analyses can be summarized as follows; firstly, the results of descritive statistics showed that students' QSL was not high (M=3.12, SD=.51), but the factor of peer relations was very high (M=4.13, SD=.69). Secondly, MANOVA procedures produced the results that although their effect sizes were not high, all school variables except school types affected on overall students' QSL. Lastly, when further analyses were conducted controlling students' home background variables such as SES and parents' concerns about their children, school variables' effects on factors compounding QSL were very complex, that is, varied against each factor.
The results can be addressed a number of policy issues. Educational administrators and school policy makers should consider boys' educational issues, technical school students' QSL, especially for their peer relations and rural students' QSL regarding their achievements and perceptions against their teachers.
