진안인삼 재배의 역사성 = The History of Ginseng Cultivation in Jinan ·

국문 초록 (Abstract)

전라북도 진안의 인삼재배 역사를 추적하여 지역 정체성을 복원하고, 지역 인삼사 연구의 기초를 마련하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 기록 자료, 구술 조사, 현지조사를 병행하여 조선 말기부터 일제강점기에 이르는 인삼재배의 역사적 전개를 밝히는 데 중요한 자료를 발굴하였다. 특히 조선 말기 이병항의 일기 『과록(課錄)』에서는 인삼 농사의 어려움을 엿볼 수 있었고, 「삼포고사(蔘圃告辭)」를 통해서는 인삼재배와 수확 의례를 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 일제강점기에 설립된 용담삼업조합(龍潭蔘業組合)의 창립총회를 다룬 신문 기사와 당시 조합 서기로 근무했던 강영규의 증언을 통해 진안이 인삼재배의 중심지로 자리매김했음을 규명하였다. 이로써 19세기 후반부터 근대 시기에 이르는 진안 지역 인삼재배 역사를 복원하고, 인삼이 상업적 작물로 성장하는 과정에서 나타난 다양한 기록을 발굴하였다. 또한 숨겨진 사료와 지역민들의 공유된 기억을 재조명하여 진안의 인삼 생산지로서의 정체성을 재확인하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to trace the history of ginseng cultivation in Jinan, Jeollabuk-do,to restore the region’s identity and lay the foundation for research on the local his-tory of ginseng. To achieve this, the study utilized archival records, oral histories,and field investigations to uncover significant materials that reveal the historicaldevelopment of ginseng cultivation from the late Joseon Dynasty to the Japanesecolonial period. In particular, Gwarok (課錄), a diary by Yi Byeong-hang fromthe late Joseon period, provides insight into the hardships of ginseng farming,while Sampo Gosa (蔘圃告辭) sheds light on the cultivation and harvest rituals ofginseng. Furthermore, newspaper articles covering the inaugural meeting of theYongdam Ginseng Cooperative Association (龍潭蔘業組合), established duringthe Japanese colonial period, along with testimonies from Kang Yeong-gyu, whoserved as the cooperative’s secretary, confirm Jinan’s emergence as a central hubfor ginseng cultivation.
This study is significant in that it reconstructs the history of ginseng cultivation inJinan from the late 19th century to the modern era and retrieves lost historical linksby uncovering various records documenting ginseng’s transformation into a commercialcrop. Additionally, by rediscovering hidden historical materials and reexaminingthe shared memories of local residents, the study reaffirms Jinan’s identityas a prominent ginseng production region.
