This paper deals with the model tests with synthetic(model) ice in normal towing tank instead of refrigerated ice for the model tests of resistance and self-propulsion in pack ice condition. The main purpose of this research is to find the correlation between with synthetic ice and with refrigerated ice and also to find the possibility of ice model tests in normal towing tank. The tests of resistance and self-propulsion have been conducted with synthetic in normal towing tank and refrigerated ice in ice tank, respectively and the results are compared with each other. The present comparisons shows the difference between them because of the difference of bending stress of each model ice. The present study is expected to be carried out with more variation of synthetic ice properties such as bending moment, viscous coefficients to have much closer correlation with refrigerated ice results. In the case of resistance, the density variation for the correlation between the two ices is mainly focused on the present study. According to the increase of density, the correlation becomes better and other parametric studies such as ice size, friction coefficient, bending moment, etc.
