공예의 정치적 가능성 - 시민적 개입과 문화적 참여로서의 공예행동주의 = The Political Prospect of Crafts - Craftivism as Civil Engagement and Cultural Participation

This study examines the social status of craft with a focus on craftivism and explores the possibilities of contemporary craft by studying examples of political and creative engagement in craft today. I begin by examining the historical contexts in which craft has functioned as a strategy of resistance by studying Arts and Crafts Movement, the Suffrage Movement, and the Apilera of Chile. Next, this study compares and analyzes the works of representative practitioners of craftivism. While Betsy Greer describes craftivism through the categories of beautification, donation, and notification, Sarah Corbett takes a more activist perspective. Meanwhile, Tal Fitzpatrick argues for the expansion of craftivism into a ‘DIY citizenship’ mode. Finally, I examined the Pink M.24 Chaffee and PM Please Quilt project as examples of craftivism. These examples demonstrate that craftivism engages with political, social, and cultural issues, and that it is a uniquely human creative ability to use crafts as forms of resistance.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 공예행동주의를 중심으로 공예의 사회적 위상을 고찰하고 오늘날 공예가 갖는 정치적이고, 창의적인 참여활동 사례들을 조명함으로써 동시대 공예의 가능성을 탐구한 것이다. 연구자는 먼저, 스피닝 비즈 운동, 모리스의 미술공예운동, 여성참정권 운동, 칠레의 아필레라 작업을 살펴보고 공예가 국가와 문화, 공동체 내에서 저항의 전략으로 기능해왔던 역사적 맥락을 고찰하였다. 나아가 본 연구는 공예행동주의의 대표적 실천가인 벳시 그리어, 사라 코벳, 탈 피츠패트릭의 논의를 비교분석하였는데, 그리어는 공예행동주의를 미화, 기부, 고지(告知)의 범주로 설명하지만, 코벳은 보다 행동주의적 관점에서 사회 구조적 변화라는 장기적 목표를 공예행동주의의 동력으로 파악한다. 한편, 탈 피츠패트릭은 공예행동주의를 ‘DIY 시민권’ 모드로 확장할 것을 주장하며, 디지털 참여 행위까지 확장시키고 있다. 마지막으로 연구자는 정치적 문제를 알리기 위한 공예행동주의의 대표적 사례로 <핑크 M.24 채피(Pink M.24 Chaffee)>(2006)를, SNS를 활용한 디지털 참여 프로젝트로 <피엠 플리즈 퀼트(PM Please Quilt)>(2015)를 고찰하였다. 이러한 사례는 공예행동주의가 정치, 사회, 문화적 이슈에 개입하고 있으며, 공예를 저항적인 방식으로 사용하는 인간의 창조적 능력임을 보여준다.
