If the close of a day or of a year be attended with solemnity, how much more solemn is the close of life ! Sometimes the end of our earthly existence approaches slowly, while at others it comes unexpectedly as a thief in the night. Happy are they who are found ready, and unhappy indeed is he who is taken by surprise. This heresy teaches that the Father alone is properly God--that the Son had no existence till he was born of the Virgin Mary--that the term Holy Spirit is merely figurative, denoting the power or energy of God--that God accepts of men on the ground of repentance merely, and Christ's death, therefore, was in no way a sacrifice for sin.
