The pollen morphology of six species, one subspecies and one variety included into three genera composing the Empetraceae S. F. Gray was investigated by means of LM, SEM and TEM. From a pollenmorphological point of view the Empetraceae are steopalynouous. All species have pollen grains united in tetrahedral tetrads with spinuliferous exine sculpture. Due to the arrangement of spinuliferous elements of the sculpture, the genus Empetrum is comparatively well distinctive in SEM. Taking the pollen morphology into account, it is suggested to include the Empetraeae in the suborder Empetrioneae of the Ericales.
