This study explores Volume II among 4 Volumes of Canciones Clásicas Españolas, the representative work of the Spanish nationalist composer Fernando J. Obradors (1897-1945), nationalist is a set of Spain. Volume II is consists of 5 songs with each different theme. These songs were written in the revived era of nationalism and have gotten great attention from musicians, scholars and music lovers due to the reinterpretation of sophisticated and harmonized style of tradition and modernity based on text and folkloric music of the 16th to 18th century. The traditional and general musical features of Spain used in these works include the use of diversity of long and short “melisma”, “Phrygian mode” which was widely used in the Middle and Near East, India and Southeast Asia as well as Spain and lastly “Spanish style rhythm”, originated from complex rhythm of dance music of each region. Furthermore, by expressing the guitar accompaniment, the folkloric instrument widely used in Spanish music as piano interpretation, they utilized the techniques of Rasgueado and Punteado as Arpeggio and Pizzicato.
In South Korea, only Volume I of all Canciones Clásicas Españolas of Obradors has been largely performed and studied, while Volumes II, III and IV have been hardly explored so far. However, it is considered as an essential work to carry out research of the entire works to correctly understand the songs of Obradors. It is expected that this study of Volume II will contribute to serve as a useful help for students and who research modern reinterpretation of Spanish folk music researchers, and should be actively conducted.
