동료 멘토링을 제공한 위암 생존자의 경험 = Experiences of Stomach Cancer Survivors Providing Peer Mentoring in Korea

Peer mentoring, which provides support to cancer survivors based on similarexperiences in the lives of the mentors, is critical for promoting the psychosocialadjustments of patients who have recently been diagnosed with cancer as well asthose providing the mentoring. This study explores the experiences of stomach cancersurvivors who are providing peer mentoring to cancer patients. In-depth interviewswere conducted with 14 cancer survivors (nine male and five female) who havecompleted treatment for stomach cancer and who are currently providing peermentoring. Participants’ mean age was 60 years old (SD=6.8); average time sincesurgery was 8.6 years (SD=2.4). Participants have been involved in a peer-mentoringprogram, as a peer mentor, for stomach cancer patients on average 3.5 years.Thematic analyses revealed 10 subthemes within three categories: a) reasons forproviding peer-mentoring (wanting to give back and help others, appreciating currentlife, and recognizing needs for peer mentoring); b) experiences of supporting peer as apeer mentor (understanding cancer patients’ difficulties with empathy, providingpractical information to cancer patients, and feeling pressure and anxiety); and c)impact of providing peer mentoring on life (finding meaning in life, promoting healthybehavior, building bonds of friendship, and building self-confidence and self-esteem).The study showed that peer mentoring provides benefits not only for patients whohave recently been diagnosed with cancer but also for cancer survivors who act aspeer mentors. Providing appropriate education and resources for peer mentoring andcollaborating with a medical social worker, as a health professional, could addressbarriers to and promote the peer-mentoring program.
