The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship among self-focused attention, social anxiety and unconditional self-acceptance. For the study, research questions were as follows. First is to identify the relationship between the self-focused attention and social anxiety, and the relationship between the unconditional self-acceptance and social anxiety. Second is to identify the moderating effect of unconditional self-acceptance in the relation between self-focused attention and social anxiety.
For the research, this study conducted a survey consisting of 3 parts, which measured self-focused attention, social anxiety and unconditional self-acceptance. A survey study was done on 543 adults ranging from twenties to fifties who lived in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do districts.
This study used a three-way ANOVA through SPSS 18.0 to identify the relationship among self-focused attention, social anxiety, unconditional self-acceptance, and demographic factors which was proved to have influence on social anxiety through t-test and one-way ANOVA.
The findings of this study were as follows: first, the level of self-focused attention, the level of unconditional self-acceptance and gender have statistically significant influence on social anxiety. Second, unconditional self-acceptance does not moderate the relationship between the level of self-focused attention and social anxiety.
Based on this results, I suggest that when a client with self absorption which means too strict self-focused attention visits the clinic because of the social anxiety problem, counsellor should provide other effective behavioral methods as well as unconditional self-acceptance until the client can easily turn his attention to other things.
