플라톤의 ꡔ국가ꡕ에서 소크라테스의 대화 상대로 등장하는 글라우콘은 소크라테스에게 기게스라는 리디아인 목동과 그의 반지에 얽힌 이야기를 들려주면서 그 반지가 상징하는 ‘멋대로 할 수 있는 자유’(exousia)의 가공할 도덕적 함의를 부각시키고 있다. 말하자면 그는 소크라테스에게 “왜 우리는 도덕적이어야만 하는가?”라는 물음을 던지고 있는 것이다. 이 논문의 첫 번째 목적은 글라우콘이 감행한 그와 같은 도전의 의미와 성격을 해명하는 것이다. 논자는 “왜 우리는 도덕적이어야만 하는가?”라는 물음은 도덕성 일반이 필연적으로 갖는 상호 주관적인 정당성이나 규범적인 구속력의 근거가 무엇인지를 묻고 있다는 점에서 “왜 우리는 도덕적인가?”와 같은 기술적인 성격의 물음과 다를 뿐만 아니라, 또한 도덕적이어야만 하는, 도덕과 무관한 이유를 묻고 있다는 점에서 “우리가 도덕적이어야만 하는 ‘도덕적인’ 이유는 무엇인가?”라는 순환적인 성격의 물음과도 다르다는 점을 보여줄 것이다. 이 논문의 두 번째 목적은 “왜 우리는 도덕적이어야만 하는가?”라는 물음에 대답하기 위한 현대의 유력한 도덕 철학적 기획의 적실성 여부를 간략히 검토하는 것이다. 논자는 도구적인 합리성의 개념에 의거하여 도덕성을 정당화하려는 기획들이 자기 이익의 극대화로 이해된 합리성 개념을 독단적으로 전제하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 또한 도구적인 합리성 자체의 일관된 적용에 의해서 발생하는 하나의 내재적인 모순에 필연적으로 빠져들 수밖에 없다는 점을 보여줄 것이다. 나아가 논자는 도구적인 합리성의 그러한 한계를, ‘합리적이지만 도구적이지는 않은’ 이성의 기능에 의거하여 도덕성의 정당화를 새롭게 시도하도록 고무하는 생산적인 자극으로 받아들일 것을 제안할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the Book Ⅱ of Plato's Politeia Glaucon, Socrates' conversational partner, tells him the story of Gyges the Lydian and his ring, showing the shocking moral implications of the absolute licence(exousia) which it symbolizes. In short, Glaucon asks Socrates the question "why should we be moral?." The first aim of this paper is to clarify the meaning and the nature of such a bold challenge to our morality. That question is different from the descriptive one "why are we moral?" in that it asks us about the ground of the intersubjective validity or the normative binding power which our morality in general necessarily has. Moreover, it must be distinguished from the recursive one "what is the 'moral' reason why we should be moral?" in that it seeks a reason for being moral which is not itself a moral reason. The second aim of this paper is to briefly examine a contemporary influential moral-philosophical project to answer the question "why should we be moral?." The project to justify our morality on the basis of the instrumental conception of rationality dogmatically presupposes that our rationality consists in the maximization of our self-interest. Moreover, it cannot avoid falling into a internal self-contradiction which arises from the consistent application of instrumental rationality itself. And these limitations of instrumental rationality have to be understood as a productive stimulus which encourages us to renew the justification of morality on the basis of the function of our reason that is 'rational but non-instrumental.'
