This study analyzes the survey of living conditions and welfare needs of Korean older persons in 2011 by the SPSS Statistics and examines the differences of support exchanges between family members by the sociological variables of 65-and-over age group to understand the current condition of supporting activity exchanges between family members. The sociological variable includes current residence, sex, age, marital status, type of family, educational background, employment status, and total annual household income as its sub-variables; the support exchange includes emotional support exchange, physical support exchange, and financial support exchange as its sub-variables; the recipients of support include children cohabiting with parents, children not-cohabiting with parents, parents(of respondent and respondent’s spouse), and spouse. This study conducts the frequency analysis to understand the sociological variables of the elderly, the recipients of support, and support exchanges, and the crosstabulation analysis and variate analysis of multivariate analysis to analyze the differences of support exchanges between family members by the sociological variables of 65-and-over age group.
The verification results of research hypothesis for this study are as follows.
First, the support exchanges between the children cohabiting with parents and the elderly are significantly varied by the sociological variables of the elderly.
Second, the support exchanges between the children not cohabiting with parents and the elderly are significantly varied by the sociological variables of the elderly.
Third, the support exchanges between the parents(of respondent and respondent’s spouse) and the elderly are significantly varied by the sociological variables of the elderly.
Fourth, the support exchanges between the spouse and the elderly are significantly varied by the sociological variables of the elderly.
Mose of the elderly are in economically difficult conditions by aging, physical decline, and retirement, and cannot equally exchange physical and financial supports with their family members. It is not a family but a national and social issue. On the other hand, even the elderly with unfavorable sociological variables(low education, low income, older age) to survival are highly contributable to provide the emotional support for their family members, and provides the emotional support to other family members in the same frequency with them. The elderly cannot be emotionally satisfied by the national and social support as much as by their own family members who have been with them for a long time; in other words, the relationship between the elderly and other family members is the key to the emotional support. The society should provide voluntary helpers and social welfare facilities to emotionally satisfy the elderly who has no family or is in a difficult condition to emotionally communicate with family members.
The support for the elderly is already a significant social issue by low birthrate and aging. There should not be an one-way but be a two-way support for the elderly to resolve the social issue and reduce the support burden.
