영국 대학에서의 한국학 교육 및 연구 현황

국문 초록 (Abstract)

영국에서의 한국학 교육과 연구는 1980년대 중반 이후 한국의 민주화와 경제적 고도성장과 함께 꾸준히 성장해 왔다. 그러나 2005년 한 해 동안 유독 영국에서의 한국학은 ‘위기’의 상황으로 언론에 심심치 않게 보도된 바 있다. 현재 영국에서 한국학은 ‘위기’를 말할 만큼의 단계에 오지 않았다고 생각된다. 문제는 아직 영국인이라는 타자에게 ‘한국학’은 그리 매력적인 존재가 되지 못하고 있다는 점이다. 영국에서 한국학을 전공한 학자라 하더라도 순수하게 한국학만을 연구하는 학자의 수는 극히 적다. 대부분 중국이나 일본, 혹은 동아시아학 전반에 관심을 두다가 한국학으로 영역을 확대하거나 옮겨온 이들이다. 한국어도 제대로 구사할 줄 모르는 한국학자가 많은 것이 지금의 현실이다.실상이 이러한 것이라 하더라도, 이제 한국학 논의는 국내, 외로 여러 가지 변화와 모색의 기로에 서 있고, 세계화 혹은 국제화를 위한 도약의 시점에 와 있다고 판단된다.영국에 있는 대학을 중심으로 한국학 교육과 연구의 현황을 살펴보면, 런던 대학과 쉐필드 대학이 영국의 한국학을 이끌어 가는 중심 역할을 담당하고 있고, 옥스퍼드와 캠브리지 대학 등으로 그 규모가 커지고 있다. 또한 굳이 한국학을 내걸지 않더라도 한국어 교육을 중심으로 영국에서의 한국학 수요는 조금씩 늘고 있다.그러나 한국학의 세계화 혹은 국제화는 단순히 한국학의 지역적 확대를 의미하지 않는다. 한국학이 얼마만큼 세계적 보편성을 확보하는가가 한국학의 세계적 가능성을 여는 열쇠가 될 것이다. 해외에서의 한국학은 타자의 시선에서 상대를 바라보는 일종의 지역학으로서의 한국학 성격을 띤다. 여기에는 비유럽 혹은 비구미 지역에 대한 인식이 문제시되는데, 영국에서는 아직 유럽 중심주의적인 틀을 벗어나지 못하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 그나마 런던 SOAS나 쉐필드 SEAS에서 학제간 교류로 이루어지는 한국학의 교수 운영 체제는 한국학이 보편성을 획득하는 데 일부 기여할 수 있을 것이다.한국학 교육과 연구의 세계화를 위해서는 우선 합리적이고 체계적인 기획과 운영이 필요하다고 생각한다. 현재 해외에서의 한국학의 미래는 지원의 규모에 달려있는 것이 사실이지만, 지원의 규모만 커진다고 한국학이 발전되는 것은 아니다. 각국이 어떤 목표를 가지고 한국학에 접근하는지 분명하게 파악하고, 보다 효율적인 운영을 위해 전략적인 기획을 해야 할 것이다. 또한 해외 한국학 교육과 연구는 국내 한국학의 성과와 분리할 수 없는데, 국내 한국학은 북한학을 포함하여 동아시아학의 관련성 속에서 이루어져야 한다. 한국학은 그 자체로 동아시아학의 진로를 모색하는 보편성을 가질 필요가 있다.마지막으로 국내외 한국학 교육 및 연구 자료의 영문화 및 한글화 작업과 이를 정보화하는 구축망의 확립이 요구된다. 한국학 자료의 영문화 작업은 현재 해외 한국학 연구의 저변 확대에 가장 절실한 조건으로 보인다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper surveys on the present state of research and education of Korean Studies at Universities in U.K. The research and education of Korean Studies in U.K. have steadily grown along with Korea's democratization and economical rapid growth since mid-1980s. On the other hand, for a year of 2005, press reports frequently said that Korean Studies in U.K. was at a crisis. However the real state is, it is clear that the discussion on Korean Studies stands at a turning point of various change and groping and is in the stage of take-off for globalization. If we view, centering around universities in U.K., the present state of research and education of Korean Studies, London Univ. and Sheffield Univ. play main roles leading Korean Studies of U.K. and the roles of Oxford Univ. and Cambridge Univ. etc become more and more important. In my opinion, the Korean Studies of U.K. doesn't reach such stage to be called 'crisis.' I think, the problem is that 'Korean Studies' isn't a very attractive being to a stranger as an Englishman as yet. There are very few, in U.K., who study only Korean Studies even if they major in Korean Studies. A large percentage of them are those who, first, had interest in China, Japan, or the whole field of East Asian Studies and then changed or extended into Korean Studies. There are many Korean Studies scholars who even can't have a command of Korean, which is the present hard fact. Globalization of Korean Studies doesn't simply mean the regional expansion of it. How much global universality Korean Studies secures is the key to open the global possibility of Korean Studies. Korean Studies shows a characteristic as a kind of Region Studies in which one looks at counterpart from a stranger's view. The problem is the understanding of non-western region and U.K. is not thought to get out of Eurocentrism yet. Also, centering around Korean language education, even if not setting Korean Studies at the head, the demand for Korean Studies in U.K. has grown gradually and so, proper preparation is required. Above all, we need reasonable and systematic planning and management. It is undeniable that the future of foreign Korean Studies depends on the scale of support at this time. But the scale of support doesn't necessary guarantee the development of Korean Studies. We should find out exactly with which object each country approaches Korean Studies and map out a strategic planning for more effective management. In addition, the research and education of Korean Studies in foreign country is indivisible from the fruit of Korean Studies in Korea. And Korean Studies should be studied in relation to East Asian Studies including North Korean Studies. This is because Korean Studies itself should hold a universality making way for East Asian Studies. What I finally suggest is that the material of Korean Studies should be translated into English or Korean and we need a network of information for this. I think the work that the material of Korean Studies is translated into English is the most urgent solution to the expansion of Korean Studies at this time.
