Those who work in PET-CT rooms can have their organs affected if they
are exposed to radiation while working. Among the organs, crystalline lens
is very sensitive, so ICRP has lowered equivalent dose each year. For
cataract and lenticular, the deterministic effects that they appear only when
they exceed threshold dose have been applied so far, but the possibility of
probabilistic effects that they can appear at low dose is recently reported.
Nevertheless, those who work in PET-CT rooms hardly wear crystalline
lens protectors, or they are not aware of the amount of crystalline lens
exposure dose. Therefore, in this study, we measured daily, weekly and
yearly accumulation doses and real time spatial doses while they wore OSL,
DKG-21 and Fluoroglass Dosimeter on their crystalline lens and body
respectively, and then we compared and analyzed the amounts.
We measured real time spatial doses and daily accumulation doses in the
pure distribution and injection procedures with the condition that all
neighboring doses interfered in front of L-Block Lead Glass Shield are
removed, and the result showed that the dose of crystalline lens was higher
than that of body by 3.99 times.
Regarding the measurement of the weekly and monthly accumulation doses,
we measured in the same condition as the actual work process by admitting
the background doses in the facility of department of nuclear medicine, and
the result showed that the dose of crystalline lens was slightly higher by
1.19, which is much lower than the difference of the value of real time
spatial doses and daily accumulation doses. This indicates the exposure dose
caused by background radiation in the facility of department of nuclear
medicine is much higher than the exposure dose by pure distribution and
injection through L-Block Lead Glass Shield, so the difference of value
became slight.
The crystalline lens is not managed in the actual work site due to lack of
dose measurement, and the rate of wearing lead glasses is remarkably low
among leads, so the difference of actual dose value seems to be greater. In
the future, it is necessary to understand the importance of crystalline lens,
to try to reduce radiation exposure for protection, and to manage the
exposure dose of crystalline lens by adopting legal dosimeter for crystalline
lens in medical institutions.
