This study devised and performed a graphing activity using name letters to study its effect on word reading and math ability of young children. The study subjects are 30 3-year-old young children who are attending Nursery W and Nursery J located in Jeollabuk-do. Kim's (2005) reading words test and a Hwang and Choi's (2007) pictorial math ability test for young children were used as research tools. This study was conducted in the order of experimenter training, a preliminary examination, preliminary study, teacher training, pre-examination, graphing activity using name letters as the experimental treatment, and post-examination. This activity is composed of three steps on a weekly basis: research and data collection, graph plotting and analysis, and concept-connecting. The results are as follows: First, graphing activity using name letters had a positive effect on word reading of young children. Among subcategories, there was a positive effect on non-word reading segmented from name letters of friends and word reading combined from name letters of friends. Second, graphing activity using name letters had a positive effect on the math ability of young children. Among subcategories, there was a positive effect on algebra, numbers and operations, geometry, and measurement, which displayed significant differences.
