Goblin is an important medium that can confirm the originality and identity of Korean culture. As an important medium for understanding Korean culture, Korean Goblin appeared mixed with Japan's Oni, Confusion is emerging in the goblin's Korean cultural identity.
Therefore, this paper aims to find out the symbolism and identity of Korean goblins through the tales of the Jeollanam-do region, where faith in goblins continues well to this day.
The goblin appears in the human world in various forms in the story. The diversity makes it difficult for people to accurately grasp the goblin. In addition, it can be interpreted in various etymological ways, It is not easy to grasp the exact identity of the goblin.
Therefore, this researcher aims to summarize the classic characteristics of goblin through its etymology, appearance, personality, and activity place by analyzing 225 goblin tales in Jeollanam-do to understand its meaning as a medium for Korean culture and lifestyle.
And based on these classical characteristics of goblins, we will substitute the theory of human desire for humans to grasp the symbolic meaning of goblins in the goblin story.
According to Msalow(1962)'s theory of humanism, five needs must be satisfied in order for humans to 'realize themselves'. This is a reasonable theory that can explain what kind of needs were met through the goblin in the lives of our ancestors.
Through this theory, the symbolism of goblins in Jeollanam-do was classified into real escape-type goblins, natural unity-type goblins, and future-oriented goblins, and examined each characteristic.
And different types of deified goblins were identified in each place. In this process, the characteristics of the goblin in the tale of the goblin gave a glimpse of the people's faith and local life culture.
