Abstract
A study on choral music features Benjamin Britten
Jang, Eun-Hye
Choral Conducting major in Music department
of General Graduate University of Hansei
I have looked into the first 3 songs of 'Rejoice in the Lamb op.30', a chorus composed by Edward Benjamin Britten. This music achieved good recognition because it proved its value both in excellent choice of the poem and its musical expression.
Followings are the unique and specific features expressed by Britten:
He freely chose a religious poem by Christopher Smart and recreated it to fit to his own music which said about the people who worship God and the way to worship God. Britten considered the words of the chorus very significantly, so he used techniques of writing the words like a drawing, of putting accent and long note upon the important words and of using rhythm with syllablc to deliver the contents of the music more precisely.
He used simple tunes rather than difficult and complicated ones and tried to express the nuances derived from the accent of the words through the changes of the rhythm and beat.
Regarding tonality, as it was shown obviously in second and third song, although it was a modernistic music, he used dissonance of two-line or quartal nonharmonic tones, organ point, ostinato, contrast of dramatic theme and dual harmony. Thus, he expressed his music tones mysticly and splendidly using the modern technique on the basis of traditional technique.
The accompaniments sound independently as if each part were composed separately, but they show unity of tune with a theme using the diversification of the same melody, rhythm and beat. The music also shows the unity of tonality, for example, the tonality of the tune of the second song and third song, Hallelujah, is C Major, which connects the movements as one.
I found out that though the length of this music is short, it was composed in a careful plan to have a well balanced form.
Britten was a composer in 20 century, but he showed a new world of music in the way grafting modern techniques onto the past traditional ones so that people can approach 20 century music more easily and more closely. He pursued practical music so that it can be played even in the churches. At the same time he showed his own features of music in a distinctive way.
Through this thesis, I hope that the chorus music of Britten will be understood well as he intended and played, and that 20 century music can be more familiar to people and sung wherever there God is worshiped.
