《증인들: 우리의 사라짐에 저항하여》 전 연구: 1980년대 배제적 에이즈(AIDS) 담론과 예술적 포용의 장 = Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing: the Exclusive AIDS Discourse and the Inclusive Artistic Sphere in the 1980s

This paper analyzes the exhibition, Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing, held in 1989. It addresses how the New York art world coped with the AIDS crisis in the 1980s in terms of the discourses of resistance and inclusion. In the 1980s’ epidemic, people with AIDS were excluded from the political discourse. Indifference of the government to AIDS, the homophobic behavior of the politicians and the church, and the biased view of mass media not only prevented correct information on AIDS from distributing to the public, but also spreaded deep prejudice against PWA to stigmatize them depraved, dirty, bad victims. In this situation, Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing was held at Artists Space in New York to show sincerely the life and death of PWA. Its curator Nan Goldin made her friends who were infected HIV or lost their friends due to AIDS participate the exhibition. In contrast to AIDS activist groups which took direct political actions, this exhibition attempted to remember and record friends who were PWA as they were. This paper argues that Witnesses formulated an alternative sphere for discourse on AIDS, taking a part of counter discourses of AIDS crisis, along with the militant political acts by AIDS activism. According to the concept of four discourses by Jacques Lacan who defines discourse as the social bond in intersubjectivity, while AIDS activism, which resistance, protest, complaint featured, can be regarded to demonstrate the discourse of the hysteric, Witnesses can be defined as the discourse of the analyst which produced a new master signifier in relation to AIDS by providing a sphere for individual expressions in the method of artistic inclusion. As its method was in the supplementary relation to that of AIDS activism, the exhibition made the counter discourse on AIDS more diverse and dynamic.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은《증인들: 우리의 사라짐에 저항하여》를 통하여 1980년대 에이즈(AIDS)의 유행으로 인해 미국 예술계가 직면한 위기와 고통을 극복했던 방식을 저항과 포용의 담론이라는 틀에서 살펴보고자 한다. 1980년대 에이즈 감염자들은 정치적 담론에서 배제되었다. 정부의 무관심, 정치인과 종교인의 동성애 혐오 발언, 미디어의 편향된 시각 등으로 인하여 에이즈에 대한 정확한 정보가 대중에게 전달되지 못했을 뿐만 아니라 에이즈 감염자에 대한 심각한 편견이 확산되어 이들은 타락하고 불결한 나쁜 피해자로 낙인찍혔다. 이런 상황에서 1989년 뉴욕 아티스츠 스페이스에서 개최된 전시《증인들: 우리의 사라짐에 저항하여》는 에이즈 감염자들의 모습을 진솔하게 보여주었다. 기획자인 낸 골딘은 에이즈 감염자이거나 에이즈로 친구를 잃은 예술가 친구들을 전시에 참여시켰다. 에이즈 행동주의 그룹이 직접 정치적 행동을 취했던 것과는 달리, 이 전시는 에이즈 감염자들인 지인들의 모습을 있는 그대로 보여주고 그들을 기억하고 기록하고자 했다. 본 논문은《증인들》 전이 대안적인 포용적 담론의 장을 형성하여 에이즈 행동주의의 투쟁적 정치 실천과 함께 에이즈 위기의 대항적 담론의 한 부분이 되었음을 밝힌다. 이때 담론을 상호주체성 속의 사회적 관계로 파악하고 설명하는 자크 라캉(Jacques Lacan)의 네 가지 기본적인 담론 구조를 참조한다. 정부에 대한 저항, 시위, 불평 등으로 특징지어지는 에이즈 행동주의가 히스테리 담론의 구조를 띠는 반면, 이 전시는 분석가 담론 구조를 띠는데, 예술적 포용이라는 방식으로 참여작가들의 개인적 표현의 장이 됨으로써 에이즈에 관한 새로운 주인기표를 생산한다. 이러한 방식은 에이즈 행동주의의 방식과 보충 관계에 있으면서 에이즈 대항 담론을 풍부하고 역동적으로 만들었다.
