〈토막〉의 무대 형상화와 그 의미에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

〈토막〉은 일제 강점기 한국 사실주의 희곡을 대표하는 수작으로 평가받고 있다. 〈토막〉은 유치진의 출세작이기도 하기 때문에, 지금까지 이 작품에 대한 연구는 주로 극작술의 측면에서 그 선구성을 지적하는 연구가 주류를 이루었다. 이로 인해 극작가로서 유치진의 위상이 격상되고, 1930년대 조선 연극계에서 신극정립의 단초가 발견되었다는 연구 결과가 도출될 수 있다. 하지만 이러한 연구성과와는 달리 〈토막〉의 제작 경로와 무대 형상화 과정 그리고 그 효과에 대한 논의는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 그 주된 원인은 자료의 미비에서 기인한다. 하지만 미비한 자료만이 참된 이유는 아니라고 해야 한다. 실제로 〈토막〉에 대한 새로운 접근을 통해, 〈토막〉의 산출 과정과 당시 극예술연구회의 내부 사정, 그리고 유치진의 입장과 〈토막〉의 제작 경로를 확인할 수 있기 때문이다. 더구나 현재 남아 있는 〈토막〉의 대본을 이용하여 〈토막〉의 무대 형상화 과정과 실체를 확인할 방안도 존재한다. 본 연구는 〈토막〉에 대한 희곡사적 분석을 존중하면서도, 무대 공연 작품으로서의 〈토막〉에 대한 분석이 필요하다는 문제의식에 공감했다. 그리고 이를 실현할 목적으로 무대 형상화 과정과 그 실체를 탐색하고 그 의의를 도출하고자 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Tomag(ghetto) is regarded as a masterpiece representing Korean realism plays during the Japanese occupation. Since Tomag(ghetto) is also the representative work of You Chijin, so far research on this work has been mainly focused on the research that points out its predecessor in terms of playwriting. As a result, the status of You Chijin as a playwright was elevated, and the results of a study that the foundation of realism play was found in Choseon(Korea) theater world in the 1930s can be drawn. However, unlike these previous research achievements, few discussions about the production path, stage shaping process, and stage effect of Tomag(ghetto) were made. The main cause is the lack of data. However, it must be said that incomplete data is not the only real reason. In fact, through a new study of Tomag(ghetto), the process of producing Tomag(ghetto), the internal circumstances of Geugyesuryeonguhoe at the time, the position of You Chijin and the production path of Tomag(ghetto) were confirmed. In addition, there is a plan to confirm the stage-shaping process and reality of Tomag(ghetto) by using the script of Tomag(ghetto) currently remaining. This study respected the existing analysis of the history of plays on Tomag(ghetto), while agreeing to the problem of needing to analyze Tomag(ghetto) as a stage performance work. For the purpose of realizing this, this study attempted to derive its significance by exploring the process and substance of stage shaping.
