현대 말레이사아 농촌사회에서의 이슬람화 (Islamization) 와 전통의례 = 끌란딴 (Kelantan) 주 말레이 마을의 치병의례를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 현대 말레이시아 농촌에서의 이슬람화(Islamization)와 그에 따른 전통의례의 변화를 다룬다. 특히 말레이 반도의 동북부 지역에 위치한 끌란딴(Kelantan)주의 말레이 농촌을 대상으로 말레이 전통의례 중 하나인 치병의례에 대한 마을주민들의 인식과 실천이 이슬람화로 인한 정치적, 사회적 변화에 따라 어떻게 해석 또는 재해석되는지를 이슬람과 전통의례를 둘러싼 담론을 통해 살펴봄으로써 말레이 전통이 이슬람에 대한 해석의 차이에 의해 크게 영향을 받고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 이슬람 본래의 정신을 기초로 진정한 이슬람 사회의 건설을 목표로 추진된 말레이시아의 이슬람화는 도시뿐만 아니라 농촌 지역에까지 확산되었다. 이에 따라 말레이 전통의례는 그 성격이 급속히 변화되기 시작했다. 이슬람화 정책의 실시로 이전까지 말레이 전통으로 간주되어 온 전통의례들은 세속적이고 비이슬람적이라는 이유로 공식적으로는 금지되었다. 그러나 전통의례가 완전히 소멸된 것은 아니며, 또 이전과 동일한 양상이나 특징을 간직하고 있는 것도 아니다. 이슬람화는 전통의례의 성격과 의미를 변화시키고 있는 것이다. 끌란딴 주정부의 주도하에 강력하고 철저하게 실시되고 있는 이슬람화의 영향으로 마을주민들은 치병의례를 말레이 전통으로 받아들이고 이슬람의 교리와 원칙에 위배되지 않는 것으로 간주하는 사람들과 그것을 이슬람의 본래 정신에 위배되는 것으로 간주하여 배척하는 사람들로 양분되었다. 주민들의 이러한 양극화 현상은 치병의례의 사례에서 극명하게 드러났다. 이 사례에 대한 기술과 분석은 이슬람화의 영향으로 인해 치병의례에 대한 마을주민들의 해석이 이슬람에 대한 입장의 차이에 따라 서로 다르게 나타나고 있음을 보여주고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the transformation of the Malay traditional rituals by Islamization policy in contemporary Malaysia. It investigates, especially, the changes in the characteristics and meanings of healing ritual after the implementation of Islamization policy in Kelantan state, which is located in northeastern area in the Malay Peninsula. In order to understand the `ordinary` Malays` attitudes toward traditions, my focus is on the religious discourses on Islam among the rural villagers. The Islamization policy in Kelantan state, led by PAS(Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party: an oppositional Islamic party), aims to recover the Islamic ethos, and eventually to establish an Islamic state(Ummah). It attempts to fully implement Islamic laws(Syariah) as the base of society and realize the leadership of Islamic scholars or leaders in all political matters. It pursues to reconstitute the Malay-Muslim identity, characterized by hightened Islamic consciousness and strict observance of Islamic principles and values. This means, for individual Malay-Muslim, new religious awareness leading to a deeper understanding of Islamic teachings and its application to everyday life. The influence of Islamization on the sociocultural landscape in Kelantan state is directly reflected in the everyday lives among Malays in rural area as well as urban area. This Islamization policy brought the transformation of Malay traditional rituals eventually to rural Malaysia. A lot of Malay traditions was regarded as `un-Islamic` or `non-Islamic`, and prohibited. There emerged bitter controversies among villagers, involving political leaders and grass-root supporters in the process of Islamization. Furthermore, there appeared the strict opposition between the `ordinary` Muslims, who had opinions that the healing ritual cannot be regarded as `un-Islamic`, and the `true` Muslims, who emphasized that it must be labelled as `un-Islamic` in that it is violenced by the true Islamic teachings. This opposition which already went deeply into the everyday lives of villagers, was obviously expressed by the religious discourse on healing ritual. The case study of healing ritual in rural Malaysia shows that the Malay- Muslims` ideas and attitudes of traditional rituals have strict oppositions in terms of the differences of religious understandings of Islamic principles and values, which have been influened by the implementation of Islamization policy.
