With the advent of Agriculture 4.0, smart agriculture has evolved by leveraging AI, big data, and IoT to enhance agricultural productivity and ensure sustainability. Smart agriculture research has been expanding through technological advancements and multidisciplinary integration, necessitating a systematic review of its development. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of 839 articles collected from the Web of Science (WoS) to examine the multidisciplinary research trends in smart agriculture over the past five years(2020–2024). The results obtained using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny indicate the following: first, research output has been steadily increasing, with China and the United States leading in publication volume. Second, while China and the United States exhibited a high proportion of single country publications, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Colombia, and Japan demonstrated active multiple country publications. South Korea ranked 15th in research output and showed a relatively high proportion of SCP. Third, the core research topics were categorized into four major themes: the utilization of digital technologies, responses to environmental changes, resource optimization in precision agriculture, and agricultural policy and management. Fourth, citation analysis revealed that besides engineering-oriented approaches, social science perspectives play a crucial role as an interconnected academic domain. This study quantitatively analyzes the research trends in smart agriculture to explore future research directions and provides a foundational resource for fostering multidisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, the findings contribute to technological development and policy formulation, supporting the establishment of sustainable smart agriculture strategies.
