The opera, one of the performing art fields, is the generalist art field of music, which is evaluated as the genre that included not only musical element but also all kinds of field such as literature, theatre, art, dances. The stage art that is relativelyfree and easy in the communication for meaning delivery included in it as the textual visual imagination of various structural elements that constitute the opera is the field that is in charge of central role to express some drama visually.
Actually, it is being changed in the trend to search for visual symbolism in the general part of social art. In spite of it, in the opera stage setting constituted the trend that shows factually the time and space element was in main current. Many of visual elements inthe drama that were overlooked not the meaning as the background of stage setting to the general part of such cultural art were appeared over the surface, and the stage setting that fills the stage has become the new interest.
The modern stage art is not the additional device. The empty space for the stage artists is as the same as a sort of canvass. They are the artists who do not describe the background of dramatist’s work factually, but creates the text of work as visual text in the same way. The visual image created by the stage artists has the same relation and function as the literacy of dramatist’s language and producer’s play.
With the autonomy interpretation of the stage artists’ text for such change of stage art function, the attention of audience has moved to the luxury and new stage setting design from the drama’s own entertainment.
Like this, with the visual image of performance being the central tool of new theatre, the stage setting figure and color has become the existence that contains more meaning than before, and because of this the stage setting located in the stage requires the constant reinterpretation for the new meaning, and various expressions and its plastic tools.
Mozart called [Don Giovanni] as 「drama geo course」 It means the opera with comedy and tragedy. Differently from all kinds of Don Giovanni and his servant Leporello’s funny actions, the protagonist’ fearless and shameless words and actions emit their own attraction. And, by expressing the nature of humanity through different characters and by revealing their existence with tragedy and comedy, it reveals in detail the real aspect of personality. [Don Giovanni] is the best opera of Mozart that extends the drama with lively character and good music. Therefore, the writer analyzes and inquires the function and role of stage setting design through the detailed theoretical analysis of the opera [Don Giovanni] and its examples of performance. Based on such research result, it presents how visualize efficiently the stage setting of the opera [Don Giovanni]with the elements of color contrast, diagonal space, functional conversion of stage, and analyzes the result through the real performance.
The stage art is the final result that materialized the work by the visual image through the understanding and analysis of stage designer’s work. Therefore, the future stage should not be limited to one figure, but explain efficiently the stage designer’s searching concept of work by visual image through the stage designer’s maximum use of knowledge and his new expression, and have the stage with not only the stage setting but also all the elements such as the actor’s acting, music, costume, illumination that make one performance in harmony.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

공연 예술 분야 중의 하나인 오페라는 음악을 중심으로 한 가장 종합적인 예술 분야로 음악적 요소는 물론 문학, 연극, 미술, 무용 적 요소 등의 각 분야를 총 망라하는 장르로 평가된다. 오페라를 이루는 여러 구성적 요소들 중에서도 텍스트의 시각적 이미지화 작업으로서 그 안에 내재되어 있는 의미 전달의 소통이 비교적 자유롭고 원활하게 이루어지는 분야인 무대미술은 어떠한 극을 시각적으로 표현하는데 중심적인 역할을 담당하는 분야라 할 수 있겠다.
현재는 사회예술 전반에 걸쳐 시각적인 상징성을 추구하는 경향으로 변화되고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금까지의 오페라 무대장치는 극의 시간적, 공간적인 요소를 사실적으로 보여주는 경향들이 주류를 이루어 왔다. 이러한 문화예술 전반의 변화에 맞추어 무대장치의 배경으로서의 의미가 아닌 그동안 간과되어왔던 극의 많은 시각적 요소들이 표면위로 떠오르게 되었고, 그 중 무대를 채우는 무대장치들은 새로운 관심거리가 되었다.
현대의 무대미술은 단지 부수적인 장치가 아니다. 무대미술가에게 있어 비어있는 무대공간은 일종의 캔버스와 동일하다. 이들은 극작가의 작품의 배경을 사실적으로 묘사하는 것이 아니라, 작품의 텍스트를 시각적 텍스트로서 동일하게 창조하는 예술가인 것이다. 무대 미술가들에 의해 창조된 시각적 이미지는 극작가의 언어와 연출가의 희곡에 대한 해석력과 대등한 관계와 기능을 가진다.
이러한 무대미술의 기능의 변화에 맞추어 무대미술가의 텍스트에 대한 해석이 자율성을 띠게 되면서 관객들의 관심은 극 자체의 재미에 대한 기대에서 무대장치디자인의 화려함이나 새로움으로 옮아가게 되었다.
이처럼 공연의 시각이미지들이 새로운 연극의 중심적인 도구가 되면서 무대장치의 형태와 색채는 그 이전보다 더욱 많은 의미를 내포하는 존재가 되었고, 이로 인해 갈수록 무대에 올려지는 무대장치들은 새로운 의미로 끊임없이 재해석을 요구하고 다양한 표현 양상과 그것을 위한 조형의 도구들을 필요로 하게 되었다.
[돈 조반니]를 모차르트는 「드라마 지오코스」라고 불렀다. 희극과 비극을 아울러 갖춘 오페라란 뜻이다. 돈 조반니와 그의 하인 레포렐로가 벌이는 갖가지 우스운 행각과 달리 주인공의 굽힐 줄 모르는 대담하고 뻔뻔한 언행은 특유의 매력을 발산한다. 그리고 어쩔 수 없는 인간의 속성을 여러 등장인물을 통해 다채롭게 표현하여 그들 모두가 희비극을 아울러 갖춘 존재임을 밝힘으로 인간성의 숨김없는 참모습을 적나라하게 드러낸다. [돈 조반니]는 생생한 인물과 훌륭한 음악이 한데 어우러져 극적인 드라마를 펼치는 모차르트 최고의 걸작 오페라이다. 따라서 필자는 오페라 [돈 조반니] 작품의 철저한 이론적 분석과 그동안의 오페라 [돈 조반니] 공연의 사례를 통해 무대장치디자인의 기능 및 역할을 분석, 고찰한다. 이러한 연구의 결과를 토대로 색채면의 대비, 사선으로 구성된 공간, 기능적인 무대의 변환 등의 요소를 사용하여 오페라 [돈 조반니]의 무대장치를 효과적으로 시각화시키기 위한 방법을 제시하고 실제 공연을 통하여 결과를 분석한다.
무대미술이란 무대디자이너의 작품에 대한 이해와 분석을 통하여 작품을 시각적 이미지로 구체화 시킨 최종적인 결과물이다. 따라서 앞으로의 무대는 하나의 형식에 국한되지 않고 무대디자이너 자신이 가진 최대한의 지식의 활용과 새로운 표현을 통하여 무대디자이너 자신이 추구 하고자 하는 작품의 개념을 시각적 이미지로서 효과적으로 설명할 수 있고 무대장치 외에도 배우의 연기, 음악, 의상, 조명 등의 하나의 공연을 만드는 모든 요소가 완전하게 융화된 무대가 이루어져야 하겠다.
