노동계급 여성에게 "출산 조절"의 권력을! = 마거릿 생어의『여성 반란자』에 나타난 성적 급진주의

국문 초록 (Abstract)

국제적 피임 운동의 선구자라 불리는 마거릿 생어는 1914년 월간지『여성 반란자』를 창간했다. 이 잡지에서 생어는 여성의 몸과 성의 자율성을 주장하며 특히 노동계급 여성의 피임의 권리를 옹호하여 1873년 이래 피임과 낙태에 관한 정보 유포를 금지한 컴스탁 법에 저항하였다.『여성 반란자』는 미국에서 남성과 여성에게 이중적인 성 기준을 부과하고, 성에 대한 공개적인 토론을 금지한 빅토리아시대의 성윤리에 적극적으로 저항하는 성적 급진주의가 시작될 때 등장했다. 이 잡지는 1914년 3월부터 10월까지 짧은 기간 발행되었으나 여성의 섹슈얼리티라는 단일한 쟁점을 다루는 최초의 잡지였다. 따라서『여성 반란자』는 당대 성적 급진주의가 형성된 배경과 그것의 핵심을 압축해서 보여준다. 특히 생어는 우편국의 우송 금지 결정에 맞서 잡지를 계속 발행하는 과정에서 처음으로 “출산 조절”이라는 용어를 사용하였다. 생어의『여성 반란자』를 기점으로 미국 사회에서는 피임이 하나의 공적 담론이 되었다. 이 글의 목표는 1914년 미국 뉴욕에서 마거릿 생어가『여성 반란자』를 창간한 전후의 배경과 그 안에 담긴 주요 쟁점을 살펴봄으로써 1910년대 성적 급진주의의 한 면모를 탐색하는 것이다. 생어는 다양한 지적 교류와 실천 활동을 통해 당대 가장 급진적인 행동가로 성장했다. 생어의『여성 반란자』에 담긴 출산 조절 프로파간다는 이후 등장한 다양한 노선의 출산 조절 운동의 영감의 원천이고, 참정권 이후를 고민하는 페미니즘에는 새로운 화두였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Margaret Sanger called the pioneer of the international birth control movement published a monthly magazine, The Woman Rebel in 1914. This magazine made resistance to the Comstock Laws since 1873 banned on mailing information about contraception and abortion, asserting the autonomy of women’s body and sexuality and specifically defending worker class women’s selection and contraception. The magazine appeared when the radical attack launched against the hypocrisy of the Victorian prudery system forced double standards to women in the early 20th century America. Although this magazine had a short life for 7 months, there had not never been the precedence dealing with the sexual themes as the only most important issue like this. Thus The Woman Rebel is a good historical example included in the sexual radicalism beginning in 1910s. Especially Sanger coined the word, ‘birth control’ in the process of the militant quarrel against the Post Office. Sanger had made the contraception and birth control into the hottest issue of public discussions after The Woman Rebel. The purpose of this article is the study on an aspect of the sexual radicalism in the United States 1910s, analysing the important articles of the Woman Rebel and researching the intellectual and political backgrounds of Sanger. She had become an radical actionist by the wide intellectual exchanges and political experiences. The birth control propaganda in The Woman Rebel by Margaret Sanger was a source of the variety birth control movement thereafter and a new thesis of post-suffrage feminism.
