20세기 의료 지리학 연구의 정립: May를 중심으로 = The Establishment of Medical Geography in the 20th Century : Focusing on May

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 20세기 의료 지리학 연구의 정립을 May를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 히포크라테스로부터 시작된 의료지리학의 흐름은 20세기 중반 May(Jacque M. May)를 기점으로 현대적인 접근이 이루어졌다. May는 의료지리학의 목적과 방법을 새롭게 논의하여 의료지리학을 정립하였다. 방법론적 측면에서는 통계적인 자료 수집과 분석을 중시하여, 이후 GIS를 이용한 연구들에 영향을 주었다. 내용적 측면에서는 자연적 요인뿐만 아니라 인구, 식문화 등의 인문적 요인들을 질병의 원인으로 다루었다. 이후 인문적 요인들의 변화를 통한 건강의 개선을 목표로 하는 연구들이 이어졌다

This paper focuses on the establishment of medical geography in the 20th century. As medical geography begins in the writing of Hippocrates, modern approach was brought on starting from May in the mid- 20th century. May discussed the objectives and methods of medical geography as a new way and had a great effect on studies afterward. In terms of methodology, he put emphasis on statistical data collection and analysis, and had an effect on studies using GIS. In terms of content, not only natural factors but also humanistic factors such as population, food and culture were regarded as causes of diseases. Since then through the change of humanistic factors, studies for improving health were progressed.
